Free, fair, participatory general elections demanded to end crisis

Politicians, academics and journalist leaders on Sunday called on the government to restore the voting rights of people by holding a free, fair and participatory general election.
The voting right of people was seized through the general elections held on January 5, 2014, they said at the discussion meeting organised by Bangladesh Civil Rights Society at National Press Club in the capital.
Bikalpadhara Bangladesh president AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury said the ruling Awami League government created the current political crisis in the country and they must take initiatives to resolve it.
‘Without holding a free, fair and participatory general election the current political crisis will not be resolved,’ B Chowdhury said.
He called on the government to take steps for stopping anarchies and arsons during the blockade and hartal programmes enforced by the BNP led opposition parties and at the same time demanded an end to extra judicial killings.
B Chowdhury called on the government to form a commission to investigate how many people were killed in petrol bombs and who were behind the creating the anarchies.
Former Dhaka University vice-chancellor and political scientist Emajuddin Ahmed, who chaired the discussion meeting, said the government would not be able to control the movements of the opposition parties applying forces.
He called on the government to take steps for resolution of the current crisis politically as the problem was political.
Gono Shasthya Kendra trustee Zafrullah Chowdhury demanded immediate stopping of extra-judicial killings and enforced disappearances in the country.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina should take immediate steps to resolve the current political crisis, he said.
He also called on the High Court to take immediate steps to resolve the crisis of the country.
He also criticised Human Right Commission and Law Commission for not taking steps against human rights violation in the country.
Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists faction president Shawkat Mahmud, journalist leader Ruhul Amin Gazi, Dhaka Union of Journalists faction president Abdul Hye Shikder, human rights activist Mohammad Shajahan, lawyer Sheikh Mohammad Azad and leader of the organisation Zakir Hossain and others also spoke at the discussion meeting.
