Hasina meets president

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina met President Abdul Hamid this evening in what is believed to be a move to form a new government.

The schedule was finalised shortly after Hasina was elected the leader of the majority party, the AL.

The AL chief entered Bhangabhaban, the office-cum-residence of the president, minues after 6:00pm.

Immediately after taking oath of office, the Awami League lawmakers held an AL Parliamentary Party (ALPP) meeting.

During the meeting, Hasina has been elected the leader of the ALPP for the 10th Jatiya Sangsad.

Soon after the meeting began at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban around 12:30pm, Syed Ashraful Islam, AL general secretary, proposed the name of Hasina as the leader of the ALPP.

Later, chief whip Abdus Shahid extended his support to the proposal.

Earlier in the morning, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Choudhury administered the oath to the newly elected lawmakers of the ruling AL including Hasina.

A total of 292 lawmakers elected in the January 5 elections.

Some 283 lawmakers from AL, Jatiya Party (Ershad), Jatiya Party (JP-Manju), Workers Party, Jatiyatabadi Samajtantrik Dal, Bangladesh Tariqat Federation, Bangladesh Nationalist Front and 13 independent candidates took the oath at the Jatiya Sangsad today.

The voting was held in 147 constituencies as the rest 153 constituencies went uncontested in the polls.
