At least 60 rooms of tin-shed structures at capital’s Konipara adjacent to Hatirjheel were gutted in a fire that broke out on Tuesday afternoon.
No casualties were, however, reported. The origin of the fire could not be established immediately.
According to dwellers, mostly garment workers, the fire originated from a ground floor room of a two-storey tin-shed structure that housed 22 rooms at about 5:30pm and spread to another three-storey tin-shed structure.
Sayeed Islam and Tofayel Mia constructed the tin-shed structures and rented out to the low-income people, they said.
Dhaka division deputy director of fire service Mozammel Haque said that 11 fire fighting units reached the spot shortly after the fire originated in a room of a tin-shed shanty.
‘Since all materials used in the dwelling units are highly combustible, fire spread immediately, but we managed to control the fire within an hour only due to availability water in Hatirjheel,’ he said.
Mozammel said that they suspected that the fire could have originated from a kitchen.
Yasin Mia, an apparel worker, said that he used to live in a room of the tin-shed house of Sayeed with three others but the fire destroyed everything they had. ‘We could not save anything as we were at work,’ he said.
