FBCCI laments damage to economy

The FBCCI has expressed serious concern over the current political unrest, saying in the Saturday statement that neither wanton violence nor large scale arrests offered a solution to the country.

“The country is headed for economic ruin at least in the immediate future unless this politics of destruction is stopped,” the FBCCI statement said.

It said: “We can never support an agitation that aims at burning and killing people. But we also believe large scale arrests to contain the violence can offer a solution.”

The FBCCI urged the political leaders to consider the larger context of the country’s economy and need for public order and give up the violent agitation without any further delay.

The country is in the grip of a 72-hour Opposition blockade from early on Saturday after a 72 hour blockade that ended early on Friday.

“These blockades are disrupting transport, inconveniencing livelihoods of millions of people, specially the poor, and, above all, ruining the education of millions of students. This has caused huge anxiety amongst parents of the students,” the FBCCI statement said.

It said: The blockades have disrupted transport across the country affecting both movement of people and goods. If transport suffers, production will suffer as well. This will drive up prices of all commodities.”

The statement said that businesspeople were the worst hit by the blockades, specially those trading in perishable commodities.

“They are likely to suffer huge losses.”

The FBCII also said that those connected with the transport trade — both owners and workers — were facing grave uncertainity due to the back-to-back blockades.

The statement also warned of the grave consequences of such a lingering political crisis because of the violence that has already left 20 killed and more than 100 injured, mostly in petrol bomb attacks.
