Eyewitness testifies in Milki case

Sagor’s wife, Fahima Islam Lopa, was arrested at her Dhanmondi residence in Dhaka on Aug 3 for her suspected involvement in the murder.

Sagor was with Milki when they left the latter’s house in Mohammadpur on the night of the murder.

Jahangir Mandal, driver of the Juba League leader Shakhawat Hossain Chanchal, also recorded his confessional statement in court.

Milki was an Organising Secretary of Juba League’s Dhaka Metropolitan (south) unit. Chanchal is a leader of the body’s north unit.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), which is investing the case, suspects his involvement in the murder.

Milki was shot in the head in the early hours of Jul 29 in front of a Gulshan shopping centre. He died later.

A closed-circuit camera in the shopping mall picked up the entire incident.

RAB identified Zahid Siddique Tarek, another Organising Secretary of the Awami League’s youth front, as the killer from the video footage and arrested him within hours of the killing.

Later, Tarek was killed in a ‘gun-battle’ between the RAB and a gang of ‘attackers who came to yank him away’.

Investigators said Tarek had been taken to an Uttara hospital in Chanchal’s private car after a bullet hit his leg in the encounter.

Jahangir was driving the car.

Meanwhile, RAB officials have claimed Lopa was having an affair with Tarek.

They said Lopa was keeping an eye on Milki so that “the killers could execute their plan.”

Lopa has already recorded her confessional statement before the court.

Two Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates, Amit Kumar Dey and Emdadul Haq, documented the Sagor’s statement as a witness and Jahangir’s confession as an accused on Wednesday.
