The four children died at the Special Child Care unit of Tangail Sadar Hospital in a span of two hours from 10am to 12 noon.
Family members of the victims said three of the babies, aged from 2-9 days, were admitted to the Sadar Hospital with pneumonia and respiratory problems on Thursday while the other on September 26.
They alleged that injections whose expiry date had passed were pushed into the bodies of the children on Friday morning and soon the babies collapsed to death.
Shah Alam, father of a baby, claimed that his nine-day-old child was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia problem on September 26 after it was born at Capital Hospital in the district town on the day. “My child died as it was administered date-expired antibiotic injection in the morning.”
Outraged by the death of the children, locals and their relatives tried to attack the doctors who fled the hospital to save themselves from the wrath of the mob.
Later, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.
Meanwhile, the hospital authorities denied the allegation.
Assistant director Dr Nur Mohammad of the hospital said the injections were not date-expired. The babies died due to their ailment as they had been suffering from various problems like pneumonia and respiratory disease.
