@albd1971leadership has been circulating a draft of the statement that the EU would be issuing after the polls. The draft statement was milquetoast at best as it did not say anything about the quality of the election, which was not free, fair or participatory. It was just a word salad of diplomatic jargon that ChatGPT could spit out. And lo and behold, the statement that the EU gave out two days after the election is more or less the same as that draft. This is incredible! Even before the election, the EU had prepared what it would say. One has to wonder if the EU’s election expert mission even saw the deserted voting centres throughout the day or they were too busy meditating in their resort. Didn’t the empty voting centres send out a loud enough message that the common public does not want this autocratic, kleptocratic party in power?
In the face of extreme repression, the only power the common people have to protest is choosing not to cast their votes in this sham election despite the pressure to do so. And the general public has done so enthusiastically, valiantly. What this episode lays bare is the EU’s Islamophobia. The EU does not give a rat’s arse about democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Those are just words they throw around to hide their Islamophobia. From the onset, the EU has been propping up this Hasina regime as it branded itself as anti-Islamist. For example, after the farcical 2014 election, her first foreign tour was to the Netherlands at the invitation of
. It is the EU’s unconditional support that has emboldened Hasina to push forward with her repressive ways. Do you think that the EU leaders are not aware of the dire situation in Bangladesh? Over the past year or so, multiple expert missions have come to Dhaka and have engaged with civil society, rights organization’s and the media, all of whom laid bare the situation. They know everything and chose to turn a blind eye as for them keeping Islamic elements at bay is more important than democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Proper wolf in sheep’s clothing they are. Do you think this pathetic, pre-recorded statement was because she promised them that she would purchase
vessels? No, my friend, it is because she speaks to their base instinct: Islamophobia. This is not a tiny, Third World country that Bangladesh or a tinpot dictator Sheikh Hasina can boss around — this is the mighty EU we are talking about. They support her unconditionally because she taps into their Islamophobia.
