EU calls on Hasina to hold dialogue

The European Union reiterated the call on Bangladeshi political actors for a dialogue to end the current crisis marked by violence.

EU ambassador and head of delegation Pierre Mayaudon apprised prime minister Sheikh Hasina of the EU’s latest position during a courtesy call at her office on Wednesday morning.

A press release issued by the EU mission in Dhaka said the ambassador “reiterated the EU’s rejection of any form of violence and constant call for dialogue”.

The envoy also deplored violence affecting innocent citizens of Bangladesh.

“Peace and stability would be critical for economic development,” he was quoted to have told the prime minister.

The ambassador discussed with the prime minister a number of issues related to the EU-Bangladesh relations, including matters of trade and development where the EU is the number one partner of Bangladesh.

He advocated bringing the relation to a new high, said the press release.

Blue economy and digital Bangladesh are, he said, among the areas where the EU can share its experience and expertise. “This would bring the partnership into a new era of modernity,” added the release.

Ambassador Mayaudon thanked the prime minister for welcoming him and for the discussion.
