“He will go back home whenever he recovers,” Hasan Mahmud said at a press conference at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
Hasan said the Prime Minister had said Ershad was in the hospital to get well.
Ershad was allowed to play golf since he wanted to, the minister said.
The Jatiya Party chief Ershad announced a boycott of the Jan 5 polls one day after his party members had submitted their nominations.
The former military dictator had said he would not go to polls since most parties including those in the Opposition were not taking part in it.
Ershad was taken to the Combined Military Hospital with a RAB-escort on Dec 12.

His party finally joined Sunday’s elections and emerged second highest bagging 33 seats in all — 20 without contest.
The Jatiya Party will be the Opposition party in parliament.
Ershad’s wife and party presidium member Raushan Ershad will be the leader of the Opposition in parliament in his absence, party leader Kazi Firoze Rashid said on Monday.
