Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad has put forward a new formula about a government that will oversee the general elections.
He has proposed formation of the government with representatives from political parties based on the votes they pulled in the 2008 parliamentary elections.
He said on Friday the election system needed reforms to facilitate formation of such an interim government.
Speaking a programme in Dhaka, the former military dictator said: “Until now money and muscles are needed in elections. Developing the country is not possible unless the election system is changed.”
“(The electorate) vote for the party and symbol, not the candidates. There are differences in the vote ratio of the parties. An all-party government has to be formed based on that (vote ratio).”
Ershad, an ally of the Awami League, talked about his party’s position on the next election.
“Many people ask me if election will be held, if I will take part in the polls. I say, I do politics for the welfare of the country, not for power… If all (parties) join the election, I will as well,” he said.
The Jatiya Party chief reiterated his argument for advocating introduction of provincial government system.
“There will be no violence, shutdown and use of arms if provincial government system is introduced. Moreover, the country will develop proportionately,” he said.
“No strike and violent political programmes will be enforced simultaneously across the country.”
Ershad criticised the amendment made to the International Crimes (Tribunal) Act after the tribunal had awarded life term to the Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Mollaand the resultant prosecution’s appeal against the verdict.
“In the world, Bangladesh set an example of amending the law after the verdict is pronounced. “I’m not speaking for any party; only criticising the amendment to the law.”
Ershad was speaking at the installation ceremony of Rangpur Division Journalist Association’s new committee at Bidyut Bhaban.
