The approval was given at an Ecnec meeting held at the NEC conference room in the city’s Shere-e-Bangla Nagar with Ecnec chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Division Secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam said eight development projects involving Tk 2,452 crore were approved today. “Of the total amount, Tk 1,782 crore will come from the government exchequer while Tk 670 crore in project assistance.”
Planning Ministry sources said the five Rab headquarters complex would be constructed at Purbachal, Mohammadpur, Khilgaon, Mirpur (Pallabi) and Kamrangirchar while the training school complex at Gazipur.
Recommending the project, the Planning Commission said the project would provide basic infrastructural facilities for Rab to give a boost to this elite force to play an effective role in saving people and property, controlling crime and maintaining law and order.
The Planning Commission also informed that a Tk 436 crore project aiming to construct headquarters for seven Rab battalions working outside Dhaka was also under progress.
The meeting also approved another revised project, titled “Development of rural roads, bridges/culverts and other infrastructures of underdeveloped Upazillas of country’s north-west region”, at a cost of Tk 751 crore.
Fifty-three upazilas under Pabna, Sirajganj, Natore, Rajshahi, Nawabganj and Bogra districts have been included under the project. The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) will implement the project during January 2010 – June 2015 period.
The other projects approved at he meeting are: Sirajganj government veterinary college establishment project (Tk 54 crore); Infrastructural development and Procurement of marine ship for Coast Guard (Tk 405 crore); Khulna shipyard road widening and development project (Tk 99 crore); Establishment of 3 Handloom Service Centers in different loom intensive areas project (Tk 51 crore); Balancing, Modernisation, Renovation and Expansion (BMRE) of the Existing Cloth Processing Centre at Madhabdi, Narsingdi project (Tk 32 crore) and Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project 2nd revised (Tk 2,452 crore, GoB-83 crore and PA-670 crore).
Ecnec members, including Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Planning Minister AK Khandker, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, ministers concerned, advisers to the Prime Minister, members of the Planning Commission, secretaries and officials concerned attended the meeting.
