Eying an inclusive and peaceful election, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Wednesday said they will take time as long as possible for a political compromise to announce the polls schedule.

“We should wait for a negotiation among political parties so that the polls can be held in a peaceful manner with the participation of all parties, but we’ve a time limit,” he told reporters at the Election Commission Secretariat after a commission’s meeting.

Rakibuddin also said army will be deployed in the next general election as they were engaged in all the previous nine national elections since 1973.

“Not a single general election was held without army since 1973 till the last one held in 2008,” the CEC said reassuring that they will try their best to hold a peaceful and credible election.

As the huge election is held in one day, it is not possible to hold the election without the army only engaging members of the regular law-enforcement agencies, including the police, and paramilitary force BGB, he added.

Replying to a query about the much-controversial BNF which is awaiting registration with the commission, Rakibuddin said they will publish a public notification in the newspapers this week to know whether the registered political parties have any objection to its registration.

The party earlier sought ‘sheaf of paddy’ as its election symbol, but now it wants ‘television’, he said.

Turning to the registration of Jamaat, Rakibddun said the commission today (Wednesday) received the certified copy of the verdict of the High Court that declared illegal the registration awarded to Jamaat-e Islami.

The Commission will take action in this regard after examining the copy, he added.
