EC does not perform constitutional duty: Rafiqul

BNP standing committee member Rafiqul Islam Miah on Tuesday alleged that as a constitutional body, the Election Commission does not perform its duty properly.

“The Election Commission works as subservient of the Prime Minister. The duty of the Election Commission is to ensure fair election with participation of all political parties. But they make controversial remarks.”

The BNP leader was addressing a rally demanding release of its standing committee member Mirza Abbas at the Jatiya Press Club.

Seven Thana units of Dhaka City Jubo Dal –Motijheel, Sabujbagh, Paltan, Khilgaon, Mugda, Shahbagh and Ramna Thans- jointly organised the rally.

Rafiqul said If BNP would have taken part in the election under Sheikh Hasina’s government, the real picture would not have been revealed.

He said the upazila elections proved that the demand for restoration of election-time neutral government is rational. “The upazila elections have justified the demand. BNP will not join the election without the neutral interim government.”

He alleged that BNP leaders, activists are victims of state terrorism. ‘False’ cases are being lodged against them. Police are being used against the countrymen.

Terming the government illegal, he said this government is not elected by voters. Hence they don’t have accountability to the people, he noted.

BNP standing committee member Goyeshar Chandra Ray, its joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Jubo Dal President Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, among others, also spoke at the rally.
