Diplomats don’t want to see violence: Dipu Moni

Foreign diplomats based here today expressed concern over recent violence and deaths following shutdowns and expressed hope that Bangladesh would be able to protect continuation of its democratic process through a peaceful way.
“As friends, they (diplomats) don’t want to see violence here. They want to see the problems resolved through peaceful initiative,” Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni told reporters after briefing diplomats on the country’s current political situation.
The diplomats were also hopeful there will be a free, fair and credible election in Bangladesh, she said.
“They (diplomats) hope that both the prime minister and the opposition leader will sit in dialogue and Bangladesh will be able to protect the continuation of its democratic process.”
The foreign minister said the government is committed to hold a free, fair and credible election.
“We hope, the opposition leader will respond to the prime minister’s proposal and the problems that remain will get resolved.”
Earlier, Dipu Moni briefed the diplomatic corps at the UNCLOS conference room at the foreign ministry, highlighting issues like the latest political situation and PM’s speech to the nation and phone conversation between the two top leaders, hartal, subsequent violence and deaths, and the next national election.
Diplomats from over 50 countries including the US, the UK, India, Australia, Germany, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and PM’s Adviser HT Imam were present.
Dipu Moni earlier briefed the diplomats and representatives of development partners jointly and also in separate groups on various issues from March 7.
