Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Tuesday said a dialogue might be held to overcome the ongoing political crisis after the release of detained top leaders of BNP by following the due legal process.
“There’s a plenty of time to hold discussions. The dialogue might take place after the release of top BNP leaders through the legal process,” he told a press briefing at Awami League President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office.
The AL leader came up with the observation when reporters asked how the dialogue will be held keeping the top leaders of the main opposition in jail.
Hanif, also a special assistant to the Prime Minister, said, “We don’t support the arrest of top BNP leaders. Their arrest is unfortunate, but the more unfortunate is their terrorist activities. Law enforcement agencies arrested them for their terrorist acts. They’ll come out through the legal process.”
In reply to a question whether the government would give a written proposal to BNP for holding dialogue, the ruling party leader said, “There’s no question of written proposal. The demand came from the opposition, so it’s the opposition to come forward with the proposal.”
About formulas given by the civil society on election, Hanif said these formulas will make the political situation more complicated. “There’s no need for any formula to hold the election as it is mentioned in the constitution.”
Awami League leaders BM Mozammel Haque, Aby Sayed Al Mahmud Swapan, Habibur Rahman Siraj, Mrinal Kanti Das and Asim Kuman Ukil were, among others, present at the press briefing.
