Dhaka Int’l Film Fest to feature 180 films

The 13th Dhaka International Film Festival (DIFF) will be held in Dhaka from 10 to 18 January 2014 and will feature around 180 films from different countries.

The general theme of the festival is “Better Film, Better Audience, Better Society.”

The Festival has been organised on a regular basis by Rainbow Film Society, which has been dedicated to the promotion of a healthy cine culture in Bangladesh and in celebrating the global mainstream in film and its social relevance since 1977.

The festival will have a competition section for Asian and Australian cinema and segment categories for: Retrospective, Cinema of the World, Children’s Film, Women Filmmakers, Short and Independent Films Section and Spiritual Films Section.

The retrospective section will present movies by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi and French filmmaker Olivier Assayas.

An international jury board will adjudicate the Asian competition section. The award will include a crest, certificate and a cash prize of taka 100,000 for the best film. The international jury committee will also select one Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Music Director and Best Cinematographer. These awards will consist of a crest and certificate.

A jury committee of the international film critics federation FIPRESCI will select one film for the Critics Award, which consists of a crest and a certificate. The audience awards for Best Film and for Best Juvenile Film also earn a crest and certificate. A five-member special jury selects one film from among all entries in the Festival for the Rainbow Award (covering all segments). This award also consists of a crest and a certificate.

One documentary and one fiction film will be selected independent Jury, appointed by the Festival, will adjudicate. Prizes will be awarded to the directors of the winning films. The award will be in the form of a certificate and a crest.

During this year’s festival the festival committee will hold a conference titled International Conference on Women Cinema.

In order to educate future film activists the festival is also going to organise the 4th Dhaka Cine Workshop from January 12 to 17.
