Dhaka north city mayor candidate Mahi B Chowdhury on Thursday announced his election manifesto built around a slogan to build ‘projonma shahor’ through three key programmes – safe Dhaka, moving Dhaka and enlightened Dhaka.
Describing himself as the candidate of projonma, Mahi, Bikalpadhara Bangladesh joint secretary general, unveiled the manifesto at a city hotel in Gulshan in the capital.
He said introducing a disaster management department in the north city corporation would be his number one target under the safe Dhaka programme to protect people’s lives and property.
He said thousands of garment workers had lost their lives in building collapse and fire.
Under the programme of safe Dhaka, he mentioned programmes including preparing an elaborate disaster management plan, awareness programmes at school, college, university, different commercial institutions and among ordinary people on disaster management planning.
The steps include introduction of special department to prevent air, sound and environment pollution, initiative to gradually bring north city under CCTV camera for security of life and property of citizens, modernise the certificate issuing system of city corporation to ensure cleanliness in city corporation markets and to ensure the standard of supplied foods in hotel and restaurants for good public health, make test of formalin and any other health hazard substance gradually mandatory through health officials before supplying goods in city corporation’s markets.
He also mentioned programmes to set up a medical college and hospital in north city, ensure free or cheap minimum health services to mother and child, elderly and ordinary citizens, particularly lower, middle and working class people, and construction of adequate public toilets through outsourcing, spend adequate portion of development budget for garbage management and clearing out of open dustbins to build up environment-friendly and bad-odour free north city.
Under moving Dhaka programme, Mahi mentioned steps to control traffic jam include introducing one-way traffic, introducing suitable traffic system through advice from transport engineers, both local and from among successful expatriate Bangladeshis, coordinated area-based bus services for students, electronic road pricing system for private vehicles during busy hours of day, introducing motor-cycle taxis, etc.
Under enlightened Dhaka programme the steps he announced include increasing awareness among guardians, teachers and the student community to create a strong citizen’s movement to stop the spread of narcotics addiction.
He further promised programmes on city forestation, vocational education for Hijra community, specified areas for business of hawkers and formation of independent committee for transparency, comprising of meritorious youths, led by senior citizens, to ensure transparency of the city corporation.
He also announced a 100-day action plan if he elected mayor.
Mahi’s father AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, also Bikalpadhara president, mother Hasina Warda Chowdhury, wife Ashfa Haq Lopa, Bikalpadhara secretary general Abdul Mannan, among others, were present at the programme.
