Terming the present government ‘undemocratic’, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh President Prof AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury on Thursday said the incidents of forced disappearance, kidnapping and killing have marked an alarming rise due to its undemocratic behaviour.
He made the remarks while addressing a hunger-strike programme organised by Bangladesh Bar Council in front of the Supreme Court Bar Bhaban.
The Bar Council organised the hunger strike as part its seven-day programme in protest against forced disappearances and killings across the country, including the abductions and killings of seven people in Narayanganj.
B Chowdhury, also a former President, said if an undemocratic and unelected government runs a country, it cannot exhibit democratic behaviour. “We can’t expect any democratic behaviour from this regime.”
Terming the present politics of forced disappearance and killing ‘shameful and ignominious’, he said the country’s people are now scared. “People make fun and laugh of it abroad. What kind of democracy it is?”
Claiming that 154 MPs of the present government are unelected, the Bikalpa Dhara chief said, “No one can call this government democratic in any way. Now what is basically needed is a democratic government. The incidents of forced disappearance and killing will continue until there’s a democratic government in the country.”
Speaking on the occasion, Bangladesh Bar Council vice-chairman Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain called the government as illegal, saying public life and property can never be safe under this illegal regime.
He also observed that the country’s lawyers along with people have to take to the streets to topple this government.
BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah and Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokan also spoke at the function.
