Death of 76 children: 3 get 10-year jail

The convicts are sentenced with the highest penalty as they committed crimes against humanity, says the court

A Dhaka court has sentenced three officials of Adflame Pharmaceuticals to 10 years of imprisonment in a case filed for the deaths of 76 children by adulterated drugs in the 1990s.

Judge Abdur Rashid of Dhaka Drug Court has passed the order on Tuesday afternoon.

The convicts are Dr Helena Pasha, director of drug manufacturing company Adflame, its manager Mizanur Rahman and quality in-charge Nigendra Pasha Bala. They were also fined Tk2 lakh each.

The court also discharged Md Noman and Abjar Pasha, two of the accused in the case, as they were not found guilty.

In its verdict, the court said the convicts are sentenced with the highest penalty as they committed crimes against society and humanity.

Of the accused, Md Noman, Abjar Pasha and Nigendra Pasha Bala are still absconding.

On December 19, 1992, the case was filed against five officials of Adflame for producing Flammadol, a brand of paracetamol syrup, which tested positive for the toxic chemical Diethylene glycol, in tests conducted both at home and abroad.

Charges against the accused in the case were framed by the court on May 28, 1994.
