Urging the government to come out of its five-year illusion, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday night said the days of the new ‘illegal’ regime are numbered.
“The government is screaming at the top of its voice that it’ll be there in office for five years. Start counting how many days you can remain there in power, let alone five years,” she said.
Khaleda came up with the remarks while addressing a programme marking the joining of Kazi Zafar Ahmed-led Jatiya Party to the 18-party alliance at her Gulshan office.
Kazi Zafar Ahmed joined the BNP-led 18-party turning the alliance into a 19-party one.
Kazi Zafar, also a former prime minister, joined the alliance by presenting a bouquet to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan office around 8.43 pm.
At the beginning of her speech, Khaleda welcomed and thanked the Kazi Zafar Ahmed-led Jatiya Party for joining the 18-party by taking the ‘right decision at the right time’. “From now on our alliance has turned into a 19-party one.”
Mentioning that on this day in 1975, Awami League had established a one-party rule, Baksal, annihilating democracy and banning all other political parties, Khaleda said the same day they extended their alliance.
She termed 19 a lucky number and said the 19-party will bring good news for the country and welfare for people in the year 2014. “People will give us reward if we can work together.”
The former premier said Awami League is a fascist party which only thinks about its party interest and indulge in widespread corruption and looting public money like they did during post-liberation period.
She claimed that all the AL leaders earned more than crore taka by plundering public money in the last five years, which exposed through their wealth statements submitted to the Election Commission.
Turing to the January 5 general election, Khaleda people have rejected Awami League responding to their call for boycotting the polls. “This is not an elected government. It’s an illegal regime as people didn’t vote them and no one gave it validity. Now they’re in power not with people’s support rather by the power of arms.
She claimed Awami League held the polls with some name-only parties and a party of an opportunist man (Ershad) with flip-flop character.
The former premier alleged that Awami League having failed to bring out people on January 5 has attacked Hindus and looted and damaged their property to divert people’s attention to a different direction.
She claimed that the government did not arrest or take action against those involved in the attacks on Hindus as the attackers belong to the ruling party. “Awami League men’s names will be revealed if a fair investigation is conducted into the incidents.”
Terming BNP and 19-parrty alliance a pro-liberation force, Khaleda said, “We’re the party of freedom fighters who directly fought in the battlefield while Awami League is party of freedom fighters who only crossed the border.”
Speaking on the occasion, Kazi Zafar Ahmed said the country’s independence and sovereignty is at stake while democracy is now dead.
The patriotic and democracy-loving people must get united to save the country and restore democracy.
“We’ll sincerely work with the 18-party risking our lives to restore the annihilated democracy. The 18-party is extended to 19-party one from today with our joining to it,” the former premier said.
He said the 18-party leaders and activists should not get frustrated over the January 5 election, it is people not Awami League have achieved a big victory by boycotting the polls.
Zafar said they have saved the party from danger realising its previous chairman Ershad’s the politics of deception and somersault.
He also claimed through a council they removed Ershad from Jatiya party and formed new committee with the votes of councillors.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members RA Gani, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, Sarwari Rahman, Mirza Abbas, Abdul Moyeen Khan, vice chairmen Abdullah Al Noman and Selima Rahman, top leaders of the 18-party alliance, including LDP chief Oli Ahmed, BJP chairman Andaleev Rahman Partha, IOJ chairman Abdul Latif Nejami and Jagpa president Shafiul Alam Prodhan and senior leaders of Jatiya Party were present.
