The government and the Election Commission should create a level playing field for all mayoral and councillor aspirants in the upcoming Dhaka city corporations elections scheduled for April 28.
Communist Party of Bangladesh and Socialist Party of Bangladesh made the call at a press conference in the capital on Thursday.
Extending support to CPB central leader Abdullah Al Kafee as mayoral candidate in DCC North and SPB central leader Bazlur Rashid Firoz in South, CPB central leader Ruhin Hossain Prince, in his written speech, raised a five-point demand for holding a free, fair and participatory elections.
The demands includes stopping use of undisclosed money, muscle powers and using religions in the elections campaigns, cancellation of decision to increase deposit money, supplying voter lists to candidates free of cost, relaxing having Tax Index Number for low income group candidates and taking actions against candidates who already violated electoral laws.
The leaders of the two parties also backed formation of a ‘city government’ so the DCC could perform development work without obstacles.
Leaders of the two parties will also take part in councillor elections in more than seven seats in the DCC elections, Ruhin said.
CPB presidium members Shamsuzzaman Selim, Sajjad Zahir Chandan, central leader Sajedul Haque Rubel, SPB central leaders Jahedul Haque Milu and Razequzzaman Ratan also spoke at the press conference.
