The Communist Party of Bangladesh and the Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal on Wednesday termed the April 28 city corporation elections in Dhaka and Chittagong a ‘farce’ and demanded to cancel it.
They made the demand in a protest rally in front of the National Press Club protesting the farcical polls and snatching people’s right to vote.
The left political parties had supported two mayoral candidates in two Dhaka city corporation elections. They also announced countrywide demonstration on May 16 protesting the farcical city polls and demanding people’s right to vote and reformation of the election system.
Addressing the rally chaired by BSD general secretary Khalequzzaman alleged that the election commission had only distributed booths and that is why they have been dilly-dallying to provide centre base result sheets to the candidates who had participated in the polls.
CPB president Mujahidul Islam Selim compared the polls to the elections held during the regime of army dictators Ziaur Rahman and HM Ershad in late 1970s and 1980s.
‘It was not an election. It was a farce. It was a clever plan to bring victory for ruling party in a digitalised way’, Selim said.
