Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has warned that the culprits behind the killing of the wife of a police officer in Chittagong will not be spared as her government will never tolerate terrorism.
‘This is very regrettable as the wife of a police officer has been killed though she had no offence…those who are committing such offences will be hunted down and brought to justice,’ she said
on Monday evening.
Sheikh Hasina expressed her firm stance while exchanging views with expatriate Bangladeshis at Madina Hilton where she has been staying during her last leg of five-day official tour to Saudi Arabia.
Hasina said she does not want such heinous incidents to take place in Bangladesh, though some isolated incidents are taking place.
She alleged that those who had earlier engaged in arson attacks in buses, trains, trucks and launches, and thus burned people to deaths are now engaged in secret killings.
The prime minister alleged that the police officer’s wife was killed when she went outside home to drop his son for his school bus. ‘I could say it clearly that those who are behind such incidents would be tracked down, Insha Allah…they won’t be spared.’
Earlier on Sunday, assailants riding a motorbike stabbed and shot dead the wife of a police officer in Chittagong city. The victim, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, 32, wife of Babul Akhter, superintendent of police of Dhaka police headquarters.
Referring to the announcement of a Tk 3,40,605 crore national budget in parliament for the FY17, Hasina said that no government in the past could deliver such a big budget.
About the country’s continuous economic progress, she said during her meetings with the heads of government and states in Bulgaria on the sidelines of the Global Women Leader’s Forum, the global leaders there termed Bangladesh’s economic progress a ‘magic’.
‘But, I would say it sincerity as we’ve passion and love for the people of the country and always work for the welfare of people, for which we could deliver….no other party except Awami League could work for the welfare of people,’ she added.
Recalling the contributions of the country’s founding president Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman towards give a better
life to the people of Bangladesh, Hasina said, ‘Had Bangabandhu could have lived more, then Bangladesh would have become a developed country at least 20 years back.’
She said that since her government works for the welfare of people with sincerity, the country has been developing gradually. ‘When the country remains in good shape, then the expatriate Bangladeshis could move ahead keeping their head high and such reputation is a great asset for them.’
Highlighting her successful Saudi visit, including the meeting with King Salman, she said from now on efforts would be there to boost the bilateral trade with the KSA while the meeting with the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry also became productive.
She said Bangladesh has joined the Alliance against Terrorism and Violent Extremism since the country’s stance is always very firm against corruption and terrorism.
Acknowledging the contribution of the expatriate Bangladeshis in the country’s economy, the Prime Minister said no one would be able anymore to undermine Bangladesh calling it poor.
‘We’ve advanced a lot to come out of the poverty level and we’ll be able to move much ahead…we’ve that belief,’ she added.
Hasina also assured the expatriate Bangladeshis in the KSA of looking into their various problems and suggested them to always abide by local laws.
Foreign minister AH Mahmood Ali, Bangladesh ambassador to KSA Golam Masih, and PM’s press secretary Ihsanul Karim were, among others, present.
