After much wait, construction work of the Sheikh Hasina International Cricket Stadium in Purbachal will finally begin in November this year.

BCB vice president Mahbub Anam said this to the media following the first meeting of the stadia’s Project Implementation Committee at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Saturday.

Mahbub chairs the five-member committee that also comprises Jalal Younus (BCB media committee chairman), Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan (facilities committee chairman), Sheikh Sohel (disciplinary committee chairman) and Advocate Anwar Hossain (purchase committee chairman).

“The physical work of the stadium can’t begin before this winter. BCB has already prepared a concept drawing. We will enlarge the concept drawing, including the dressing room and all, and prepare all the details. The BCB has already taken the decision. There will be a stadium there. There will also be an academy ground. That means we will get two fields. In this regard, the BCB has already prepared a design,” Mahbub informed.

“It was the first meeting of the PIC, sort of an introductory meeting. We have prepared an outline of our plans. We will include a representative from Buet (Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology). We will also take auditors and go forward with our work.

“The land was registered on behalf of the BCB. The honorable Prime Minister allotted this land for us through Rajuk (Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakkha). We will start work on stadium possession this month. We will finalise our plans after that. Protecting the stadium, establishing a site office, we will go forward accordingly.

“We have around 37 acres of land, we have decided as to what we will do there. We will go forward in accordance with the architectural design,” he added.

The BCB director Mahbub said it will take around two years to complete construction work.

He added, “We hope the stadium will stand out for its beauty not only in this region, but the whole world. Since this will be a green field stadium, we have the possibility to do a lot of work.”

When queried about the future of the other stadiums in the country, Mahbub said, “Those properties belong to the National Sports Council. We get the permission from them to use the stadiums. Since BCB has taken lease of the Mirpur Stadium, we do all the maintenance. No matter which stadium is assigned to us through lease or any other way, we will look after the maintenance work.”
