Nazmul Huda, a former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association and ex-BNP leader, has said the Constitution allowed the formation of a caretaker government to oversee free and fair elections.
He also said his party should feel sorry for ‘punishing’ him.
The former minister said at a press conference that he hoped to contest the election on a BNP ticket.
Huda claims his resignation, submitted to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, had not been accepted. Technically, therefore, he still remains a primary member of the party.
Huda had been made the State Minister for Information after the BNP came to power in 1991 election. But he lost his post for suggesting to the media the ‘outline’ of a neutral polls-time government.
The ruling Awami League had then campaigned for the formation of a caretaker government to oversee the elections.
The maverick leader was again pulled up by the BNP in 2010 for criticising a strike call issued by the party in protest against a government move to take away Khaleda’s residence in Dhaka Cantonment.
The BNP chief expelled Huda from the party on Nov 21, 2010 for ‘issuing statements against the party’s stand’.
Six months later. Huda pleaded to be taken back and Khaleda responded by restoring his primary membership on Apr 5, 2011.
But Huda resigned from the party within a year after Khaleda ignored his advice for a dialogue with the government.
After leaving the BNP, Huda formed the Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF) towards the end of last year. But the new party expelled him within a few days.
“I am not with them. I want to say that I am with BNP and always will be with it,” Huda said in reply to a question about his ties with the BNF.
When asked if he is holding the press conference on behalf of the BNP, he said, “I am holding this brief as a former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association and the founder of the ‘Bangladesh Manabadhikar Bastabayan Sangstha’, not as a leader of BNP.”
In the press conference, he claimed the Constitution can allow a ‘neutral’ authority to oversee a ‘fair’ election and provided his reasons for believing that.
