Secretary General of the Commonwealth Kamalesh Sharma arrived here on a four-day visit to Bangladesh and met Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni on Sunday.
During the meeting held in Parliament, they discussed the two-day 10th Commonwealth Women Affairs Ministers’ conference beginning here on Monday.
He expressed thanks to the Foreign Minister for her utmost efforts to facilitate hosting the Ministerial Meeting in Dhaka.
Dipu Moni said that Bangladesh is happy to host this meeting as Bangladesh is regarded as a champion of women’s empowerment in the developing world.
She said the outcome of this meeting will be an important element in the agenda of the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in November this year.
The Foreign Minister affirmed Bangladesh’s abiding commitment to the Commonwealth’s fundamental values and principles such as the promotion of democracy, Good governance, the rule of law, human rights, gender equality, equal opportunity and freedom of expression.
Bangladesh has recently decided to rejoin the Commonwealth Foundation and already paid off the contributions to it.
