Clashes erupted on Thursday at Ananda Bazar Market area in Dhaka’s Chankharpul activists after several students of Dhaka University were beaten up by activists of Awami League and Sramik League.
Many including seven DU students were injured when police fired rubber bullets to disperse the mob at noon.
Police and witnesses said Ananda Bazar Market had a long history of dispute over ownership. The incident began when activists led by two leaders of the Fulbaria Sramik League and ruling Awami League’s ward number 34 unit went there and started an altercation with the market’s staff.
Activists of Sramik League and Awami League assaulted the Dhaka University students when they somehow got involved in the argument.
Hundreds of students went to the market area after the news of the assault reached the university, triggering a tripartite clash involving the market staff, ruling party activists and DU students.
Later, police brought the situation under control by firing rubber bullets to disperse the troublemakers, Shahbagh Police Station Inspector (Investigation) MA Jalil said.
Chawkbazar, Bangshal and Shahbagh police were on guard at the area after the clashes, he said.
A bus was also set on fire during the skirmish. Two fire fighting units doused the fire, said Fire Service control room officer Nazma Aktar.
Meanwhile, the injured including the seven DU students were taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
The seven were identified as Botany department students ‘Shohag’ and ‘Manud’, Biochemistry department’s ‘Sumon’, ‘Rashed’ and Ishaq and Applied Statistics department student ‘Sajib’.
DU Acting Proctor Prof Amzad Ali said, “Police can’t open fire on the students like this. We are looking into the matter. Then necessary measures will be taken.
