Title contenders Abahani will be looking forward to closing the gap on Bangladesh Premier League leaders Bashundhara Kings’ nine-point lead when they host the defending champions at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today.
The Sky Blues, who lost their crown to Kings in the 2018/19 season, are trailing the Kings by nine points, but have played a game less. A win would not only reduce the deficit in the 13-team table, but also give six-time professional league champions Abahani their first win over the Kings following three consecutive defeats.
The country’s most successful team lost both meetings against Kings in the 2020 BPL and one in the 2021 Federation Cup after a 3-1 win in the 2018-19 season’s Federation Cup. Nevertheless, restricting Kings will not be an easy task for an inconsistent Abahani.
Kings remain unbeaten with 10 wins from 11 matches and have been riding on the brilliant goalscoring performances of Brazilian forward Robson Da Silva and Argentine striker Raul Becerra, with the pair accounting for 21 of the Kings’ 28 goals across 11 matches.
