Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday blamed the false propaganda of the opposition for the defeat of the Awami League-backed candidates in all five city corporation elections.
She came up with the view when the newly-elected office bearers of Barisal District Lawyers’ Association met her at her office.
Association President KBS Ahmed Kabir and General Secretary Mohammad Golam Kabir Badal led the delegation.
PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters after the meeting.
The people of the country who got confused due to the propaganda of the BNP-Jamaat alliance now have realised that they were misguided by the opposition parties, the prime minister said.
“The BNP-Jamaat alliance is very strong and efficient in spreading false propaganda. They spread false information against Awami League,” she said.
Mentioning Hefajat-e Islam’s programme on May 5-6 in Motijheel, Hasina said the opposition BNP claimed that several thousand people were killed during the law enforcement agencies’ operation on that night. “How had it been possible for them to kill several thousand people in the just half-an-hour operation!” she wondered.
Referring to the opposition leader’s claim in a Narsingdi rally that the law enforcement agencies fired more than 150,000 gunshots during the operation, the premier questioned whether it is possible at this short time.
She also said the opposition always spread false propaganda against AL that if this party comes to power there will be no Islam in the country, there will be no azan, namaj and, janaza in the country.
Hasina said they had done the same thing during her government’s previous tenure propagating that a vast area of the country up to Feni would go under India which was later proved false. “But everything is there as it was,” she said adding that AL always worked for Islam.
The premier said she starts her day by offering Fazr prayer and reciting from the holy Quran. “I don’t know in which hand Islam will be safe other than me,” she said.
Hasina said AL that has brought Independence of the nation always works for the welfare of people to bring smile to their faces.
Describing her government’s various programmes implemented during the last four and half years for the country’s development, the AL president said her government has ensured quality education, health care and ICT services to the doorsteps of people.
In this regard, she mentioned that poverty has come down below 26 percent, per capita income risen to 1,044 US dollars while country’s reserve already crossed 16 billion-dollar mark.
As a result, the economy has now got a strong footing on one side while the government has opened huge employment opportunity and provided various social safety measures for the rural poor on the other, Hasina added.
