Chinese Foreign Vice Minister’s Dhaka visit postponed

The visit of Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Liu Zhenmin who was scheduled to reach here on Saturday has been postponed ‘due to flight cancellation’ following heavy fog in Kunming.

“Kunming Airport was closed due to heavy fog and won’t be able not provide service till tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon. Therefore, all the flights of Kunming airport are cancelled,” Ye Wei, an official at the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka, said on Friday.

Due to short notice of the cancellation, he said, they could not arrange another flight for Liu. “We’ve no choice but to postpone the visit.”

Liu was supposed to arrive here on a two-day visit by a flight from Beijing – MU2035 (China Eastern Airlines flight), which was supposed to have a stopover in Kunming.

However, there is no fresh schedule yet for his visit, originally scheduled for December 26-27.

During his visit, Liu Zhenmin who oversees Asia, treaty and law, and boundary and ocean affairs was supposed to review the entire gamut of bilateral relations between the two friendly countries apart from the issues related to peace and political stability.

Though the key purpose of the Chinese Vice Minister’s two-day visit was to hold the 10th Foreign Office Consultation with his Bangladesh counterpart, he was scheduled to discuss political issues with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia.
