Police have decided to install close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in Dhaka University’s Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) following the murder of writer-blogger Avijit Roy.
Shahbagh and Central Shaheed Minar will also be brought under CCTV camera surveillance, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mohammad Asaduzzaman Miah said on Saturday.
He was speaking at a seminar on the campus on police’s contribution to the Liberation war and role to protect democracy and human rights.
Asaduzzaman said the entry and exit points of the city and the diplomatic zone had already been brought under CCTV camera surveillance.
“It will make tackling crimes and identifying criminals easier,” he said.
The DMP commissioner also spoke about his force’s recent achievements.
“It is the police who prevented the anarchy by Hifzat-e Islam backed by the forces against the independence courageously in 2013,” he said.
“The independence of the country would be in danger if the hundreds of thousands of people could not be stopped without any casualty that day,” he claimed.
“We’ve investigated successfully the recent crimes in Dhaka. Basher Kella administrator has been arrested. We are getting information from him,” he said.
The DMP commissioner also said police were working to ensure normal life during agitations by BNP-led alliance.
“We have almost brought normalcy in Dhaka,” he said.
About police’s contribution to the Liberation War in 1971, he said, “Police opened their
armouries, trained civilians. They spread throughout the country with 303 rifles after the attack on Razarbagh Police Lines.”
HT Imam, who advises Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on political affairs, and Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque, were also present at the seminar organised by ‘Journey’.
The adviser to the PM expressed his anger over police’s inactiveness during the murder of writer-blogger Avijit near the apparently secured Amar Ekushey Book Fair and Shahbagh Police Station on Feb 26.
