A court here on Monday trashed a defamation suit hours after it was filed against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for allegedly distorting the Liberation War history calling late president Ziaur Rahman the country’s first president.

After a brief hearing on the defamation suit, Metropolitan Magistrate Samsul Arefin overturned it around 3:50 pm.

AB Siddiqui, president of Bangladesh Jananetri Parishad, a pro-Awami League organisation, filed the defamation case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka in the morning.

Rawshan Ara Shikdar, the lawyer for the complainant, said the case was filed with the court of magistrate Shamsul Arefin.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia termed Ziaur Rahaman Bangladesh’s first president while addressing a programme of Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal on March 27, marking the Independence Day.
