Windies beat Tigers by 75 runs in 4th ODI
West Indies recovered from a terrible start to their day to complete a spirited victory in the fourth one-day international against Bangladesh at the city’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Friday.
Their 75-run win with 15.5 overs to spare under the floodlights in the day-night match squared the series at 2-2 with the final match scheduled for Saturday.
After losing the toss, the visitors were invited to bat and lost wickets at regular intervals since the beginning of the innings amid tight bowling and some brilliant fielding with the first wicket of Chris Gayle taken by Mashrafe Mortaza in the sixth over.
Finally, they scored 211 losing nine wickets in the stipulated 50 overs after skipper Darren Sammy smashed an unbeaten 60 off 62.
Darren Sammy was the highest scorer for West Indies and remained unbeaten at the last moment. His innings featured five boundaries and two sixes.
Bangladeshi spinners Mahmudullah grabbed three wickets, sending back Kieron Pollard (2), Devon Thomas (10) and Veerasammy Permaul (1) to the pavilion.
Other bowlers Elias Sunny and Abdur Razzak captured two wickets each while Sohag Gazi and Mashrafe Mortaza took one wicket each.
Chasing 212-run target, Bangladesh lost its top five batsmen only for 13 runs within six overs.
Anamul Haque scored 1, Naeem Islam 0, Nasir Hossain 2, Mominul Haque 1 and Tamim Iqbal scored 1 before went back to the pavilion within six overs.
Later, skipper Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah made a 74-run partnership.
But Sunil Narine broke the partnership and sent Mushfiqur back to the pavilion in 22nd over.
Mushfiqur scored 27 from 58 balls that featured two boundaries.
The hosts were bowled out for 136 runs in 34.1 overs. Mahmudullah scored 56 from 78 balls and remained unbeaten at the last moment.
Darren Sammy grabbed three wickets while Kemar Roach, Veerasammy Permaul and Dwayne Smith grabbed two wickets and Sunil Narine took one wicket.
The Tigers brought in left-arm spinner Elias Sunny in place of paceman Rubel Hossain while the tourists replaced fast bowler Ravi Rampaul for Kemar Roach for today’s match.
Earlier, Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and invited West Indies to bat.
Bangladesh beat tourists by seven wickets in the opening match in Khulna on November 30 and by 160 runs in the second match on December 2 on the same venue.
West Indies beat Bangladesh by four wickets in the third ODI on December 5 in Dhaka.
West Indies have clinched the two-match Test series by 2-0 against Bangladesh.
The West Indies cricket team arrived on a month-long tour in Dhaka on November 5 to play a full- fledged series against host Bangladesh.
The fifth and final one-dayer will be held in Dhaka on December 8.
ICC World T20 winners will also play a lone T20 in Dhaka on December 10.
