Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hand over posthumous award – ‘Bangladesh Mukhtijudda Sommamona’ to Canadian Prime Minister Justine Trudeau for his father’s role in the 1971 War of Independence.
Pierre Elliott Trudeau, former Canadian PM was recognized in 2012 for his significant contributions during the Liberation War.
Canada had extended direct support to Bangladesh in 1971 and stood beside Bangladesh in rebuilding the war-ravaged country and its development, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali said in a press briefing on Sunday.
PM Hasina will be visiting Canada to attend a conference on September 16-17 before travelling to New York to attend the UN General Assembly.
Ali said Canada had directly supported Bangladesh during the 1971 struggle.
During the visit, Bangladesh will discuss security cooperation and other issues, including countering terrorism and militancy, climate change, development cooperation and repatriation of Bangabandhu’s killers.
The minister said they are expecting a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau.
The Foreign Minister also added that the Bangladesh Prime Minister and nine invited heads of State and government, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Microsoft founder Bill Gates will attend the inaugural session of the conference.
