Budget blunt, fails to look at poor: Amir Khasru

No illegal govt can place any budget, says BNP

Former commerce minister and BNP chairperson’s adviser Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Thursday termed blunt the national budget for fiscal year 2014-15 saying that there is nothing good for people in it.

“The lion share of the allocation in the budget has been kept for recovering the black hole created in the country’s economy due to widespread plundering by the ruling party men in the last five years. There’s nothing good for people in the new budget,” he said.

Talking to reporters at a city hotel, Khasru came up with his personal opinion about the budget as BNP had earlier decided not to give any reaction to the budget.

Contacted, senior BNP leaders declined to comment on the budget saying the current illegal government has no right to place budget in parliament.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith placed a TK 2,50,506 crore budget for fiscal year 2014-15 in parliament in the afternoon.

This is the first budget of the current Awami League government in its second consecutive term after the January 5 election boycotted by BNP and many other registered political parties.

Replying to a question, Khasru said this government is unelected and this parliament and cabinet are illegal. “No illegal and unelected government can place any budget.”

Referring to the budget size, the ex-minister said this is a very big size budget but the majority share of the allocation has been kept for non-development sector.

Meanwhile, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they will not give any formal reaction to the budget. “This is an illegitimate regime as they are not elected with people’s vote. This parliament is also illegal. So, this illegal government has no moral right to place any national budget.

Sought reaction, BNP standing committee members MK Anwar and Rafiqul Islam Miah also declined to make any comment about the budget.

BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said their party will not give any reaction to a budget which is placed by a government which illegally assumed office with force without people’s mandate.

Earlier in the day at a discussion, Fakhrul termed ‘illegal and unethical’ the placing of the national budget.

“The current regime can no way be called a legitimate government. The present parliament is illegal, too.  How come they place the national budget in parliament those who were not elected by people,” he told a discussion prior to placing the budget by the Finance Minister.
