Chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Sunil Kanti Bose on Saturday sought cooperation from all the mobile phone operators in eliminating illegal Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) business.
He also urged the operators to complete SIM registration properly in a bid to stop the unauthorised VoIP business.
The BTRC chief made the call while addressing a roundtable, titled ‘Illegal Call Termination, Current Situation and Way-out’ organised by Telecom Reporters Network Bangladesh (TRNB) at a city hotel.
Over SIM registration, Sunil Kanti said, “Post-activation isn’t being done properly in activating new SIMs. Mobile operators should complete SIM registration procedure in a right way.”
The BTRC chairman said the government is taking steps so that the mobile phone operators could complete their registration as per the national identity card. “This will make the supervision easier,” he added.
He also informed that the BTRC is going to give some more directives for the mobile phone companies for their self regulation.
Sunil Kanti also said despite seizures of VIoP equipment, the unauthorised business go on unabated.
To resist the illegal VoIP business, the government is setting up modern technologies in the country.
In this connection, Sunil Kanti mentioned that to stop the illegal VOIP the government is taking three steps.
“To put the gateways (IGW, ICX and IIG) under supervision of the regulatory authority is going to set up modern technology in the next three weeks.”
He also mentioned that the authority would set up modern technology to supervise the mobile phone operators.
The BTRC chief said that by setting up the modern technology it would be possible to determine how much foreign calls are coming in or going out. “But everything needs its time.”
Talking about the political influence in the illegal VoIP business, he said there is no political pressure right now.
Speaking on the occasion, telecommunication expert Abu Sayed said politicians are involved in the illegal VoIP business.
Teletalk managing director Mujibur Rahman, former president of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Mir Nasir Hossain, among others, addressed the programme.
TRNB general secretary Sajal Zahid presented ‘key-note’ paper at the programme moderated by its president Abdullah Al Manum.
