BSF kills two Bangladeshis, beat woman entering country

An Indian Border Security Force man on Tuesday allegedly entered the Bangladesh territory, beat up a woman and opened fire as the local residents chased him in Hatibandha upazila of northern Lalmonirhat on Tuesday.

Local residents Dulal Hossain and Anwar Hossain said that the incident took place in Singimari union of  the upazila at about 2:30pm when an elderly woman Zohra Begum was drying her clothes in the nearby border area.

As the BSF man beat up the woman, local residents came forward and protested against his crossing the border, they said.

They alleged that the BSF man then opened fire when the Border Guard Bangladesh personnel came and brought the situation under control.

Singamari union parishad member Shamsul Alam said that often the BSF personnel cross the border but on Tuesday this man started beating the elderly village woman and opened fire when the villagers chased him.

Singimari Border Guard Bangladesh outpost in charge Nasir Hossain said that on information they rushed to the spot and held a flag meeting with the BSF. He said that Bangladesh protested against the BSF man’s action.

Meanwhile on Monday, the BSF allegedly shot dead two Bangladeshi nationals on the Haripur border of northern Thakurgaon district, while a body of another who got killed in Rajshahi border on Sunday was handed to the Bangladeshi authorities.

New Age correspondent in Thakurgaon, referring Bangladeshi local officials and elected representatives, reported that the bullet-hit body of Md Mokles, 28, son of Nazrul Islam of Haripur, was found floating in the bordering river Shironi, while another victim Jahurul Islam, 27, who was detained by the BSF after being injured, died in India.

The injured, Idrish Ali, 30, son of Dulu Mohammad, was resident of Barosa village of Amjankhor union of Baliadangi upzila in Thakurgaon.

This was the second shooting incident within 24 hours as Rojim Ali, 30, a resident of Nimoil village of Chapainawabganj was shot dead in border area of the district on Sunday.

The latest incident took place at about 5:30am when some Bangladeshi citizens were crossing the international border.

Haripur police officer-in-charge ABM Firoz Wahid said that they recovered Mokles’s body and after inquest sent it to the district hospital for post mortem examination.

Kathaldangi border outpost company commander Entazul Haque said that the BSF shot a Bangladeshi inside the Indian border. He was later taken to a hospital where he died. His body is still with the BSF.

BGB Thakurgaon sector commander Colonel MH Hafizur Rahman said that two Bangladeshis were killed in BSF firing on the border. A flag meeting was held in this regard.

BSF would return the remaining body to the authorities after completing the formalities, he added.

The killings took place after Indian home minister Amit Shah on December 1 said that the country’s borders with Bangladesh and Pakistan would be completely secure in the next two years.

The Indian home minister, Amit, said that the Narendra Modi government has fenced and plugged gaps in about 560 km of the India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh borders in the nine years since it came to power.

New Age correspondent in Rajshahi reported that the BSF handed over the body of Rojim two days after he had been shot dead on the border in Chapainawabganj district on Sunday.

The body was handed over following a flag meeting at Rokanpur border on Monday, said Border Guard Bangladesh-16 battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Sadiqur Rahman.

Gomostapur police officer-in-charge Mahbubur Rahman said that they handed over the body to the relatives.

Rights group Ain O Salish Kendra recorded in its report that at least 20 people were killed in the BSF shooting between January and October this year.
