The Left-wing party’s rebel group led by Sharif Nurul Ambia and Nazmul Haque Prodhan announced its plan at a press conference in Dhaka on Thursday.

Ambia, Prodhan and Moin Uddin Khan Badal were present at the press meet.

The leaders had left the Hasanul Haq Inu-led party during its national council on Mar 12 in protest against Inu’s bid to foist Shirin Akhter as its general secretary “without a vote”.

They later named Sharif Nurul Ambia and Nazmul Haque Prodhan, MP, the president and general secretary respectively.

The breakaway leaders, however, said that the ‘door is still open’ for reunification.

They announced an expansion of the central JaSoD committee and named several leaders for their inclusion in it.

Prodhan said the full committee will be announced shortly.

Speaking of the party rift, he said, “Our protest against Mr Inu’s undemocratic activities was not a sudden incident. It was an expression of resentment accumulated over time.”

“But the door for reunification is still open,” he added.

About the party symbol – torch – Prodhan said the majority group in the standing committee deserved the symbol.

“One of the 14 standing committee members passed away, one is sick, and another hasn’t cleared his position (on which side he is). We have seven with us of the remaining 11,” he said justifying their claim for the symbol.

Prodhan said both the factions had approached the Election Commission, claiming the symbol. “The EC will take steps as per rules after examining who are in the majority.”
