No casualties were reported in the bombing at Choudhuryhaat on Monday morning, said Rail Police Nayek Abdul Kuddus.

He was in charge of securing the train.

The shuttle train left Sholashahar at 7:45 am, witnesses said.

The bombings started when the train reached Choudhuryhaat where blazing tyres were thrown on tracks to block the train.

“The attackers were throwing hand bombs from a field on one side of the train. Policemen fired 17 to 18 rounds in defense,” said Nayek Kuddus.

Police found several hand-made bombs and stones while raiding Chittagong University’s Suhrawardy Hall after a clash between Islami Chhatra Shibir and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) turned violent on campus on Aug 24.

The Shibir is the student affiliate of Jamaat-e-Islami, the BCL of the ruling Awami League.

The authorities closed the ‘Shibir-dominated’ Suhrawardy Hall following the raid.

The university’s Shah Amanat Hall has been closed after fighting between Shibir and BCL led to murder of two students on Jan 12.

Meanwhile, a media statement under the banner of ‘Residential Hall Students’ called for a students strike from Sunday to press the authorities into reopening these halls.

“The regular students have nothing to do with this strike,” proctor Siraj Uddin Doula told bdnews24.com. There can’t be bombing in a regular student programme.”

He claimed the campus was functioning normally on Sunday with classes, examinations and students commuting in and out of the university on the shuttle trains without disruptions.

“We’ve asked police to make sure the trains are running properly.”

Twenty policemen were on board each train to prevent attacks, said Nayek Kuddus.
