The BNP will participate in the upcoming Dhaka and Chittagong city polls if the government creates a level-playing field for all candidates.BNP Standing Committee Member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman said this while speaking to journalists after placing a wreath at the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman in the city on Thursday marking the 45th Independence Day.
He also urged the government to create a congenial atmosphere to make the elections free and fair.
“We must participate in the city polls if candidates are released and cannot be harassed. If these are not ensured, then there is no point contesting the polls, he said.
“There are some problems. Many probable candidates, especially leaders from the Dhaka city unit, are either in jail or on the run. Nobody knows whether the government will allow them to campaign freely”, he said.
BNP leaders Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Enam Ahmed Chowdhury, Shajahan Omar, Mustafizur Rahman Babul, Asadul Karim Shaheen and Abu Syed Khan Khokan were also present.
