The BNP on Friday warned the government of a tough response if there was any rigging in the maiden Gazipur City Corporation election scheduled for Saturday.
Party’s Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir issued the threat at a programme at the capital Dhaka on in the morning.
He also repeated the opposition demand for Army deployment on polling day to ensure trouble-free voting.
“The government is conspiring to rig votes in Gazipur. We want to make it clear that if that happens, our response will be tough. And from there the movement to oust the government will begin,” said Mirza Fakhrul.
Opposition 18-Party alliance-backed MA Mannan and ruling Awami League-led 14-Party alliance-backed Azmat Ullah Khan are contesting for the Mayor post of the newly formed city corporation apart for our other candidates.
Fakhrul on Friday argued in favour of deploying the Army. “We have come to know that the ruling party has gathered goons in Gazipur. They are also spreading a huge amount of money.”
The local administration was hand in glove with the ruling party, he alleged. “That’s why we are demanding the Army’s deployment to ensure a fair election.”
He asked the Election Commission to meet the BNP’s demand. Otherwise, Fakhrul said, the EC would be held responsible for any anything untoward during the polls.
The government has become desperate after losing in the four city corporation elections recently, he said. “They have lost the people’s support. The ruling party rigged the votes in the Kishoreganj-4 by-polls on Wednesday. That shows the Gazipur polls won’t be fair.”
