BNP leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy on Monday urged the opposition leaders and activists to get united for creating a strong resistance against the government’s repressive policy.
“I want to tell the party leaders and activists that the days are over for putting forward the face after having slapped. Now we must build a strong resistance instead of lodging protests,” he said.
The BNP leader was addressing a meeting at the Jatiya Press Club arranged by BNP’s key alliance partner LDP protesting the jailing of senior BNP leaders, including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Mirza Abbas.
A Dhaka court sent BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas and its Dhaka City member secretary Abdus Salam to jail rejecting their bail petitions in three cases, including that of a murder, in connection with an arson attack on a bus.
Protesting the court order, Gayeshwar said the BNP leaders were sent to jail for raising their voice in favour of democracy and people’s rights. “I may also be dumped into prison two days later.”
Criticising the government for what he said its growing repressive acts and incidents of extrajudicial killing, the BNP policymaking body member said the prison is safer than staying outside under the current regime.
He said the government is killing people, making them disappeared and arresting opposition leaders and activists in ‘false’ cases as it is a very weak regime.
The BNP leader deplored that people are being deprived of justice as the government has brought the judiciary under its grip.
