The BNP is trying to make army ‘controversial’, senior Awami League leader Mohammad Nasim has alleged.
He made the remark on Monday in response to the Opposition’s allegation that the government was pitting the armed forces against the people.
After a 14-Party alliance meeting at the ruling party President’s Dhanmondi political office, Nasim told reporters, “BNP leaders are making comments to make the army controversial.”
BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan on Saturday had alleged that the government was trying to create a face-off between army and the people by deploying troops during the 10th parliamentary elections, which the main opposition have boycotted.
The Election Commission on Friday announced that the troops would be deployed on poll duty for 15 days – from Dec 26 to Jan 9 – to ensure free and fair polls.
Awami League Presidium member Nasim said, “BNP had demanded army deployment in all local elections. And when the army would be deployed to maintain law and order, they have started making comments to create controversy.”
“Their only goal is to thwart the polls. I hope the people have understood their nature,” he said.
He also urged everyone to cast their votes on Jan 5 with festivity.
“We can’t do anything if anyone leaves the playground,” the 14-Party alliance spokesperson said referring to the Opposition’s decision to stay away from the polls.
Central leaders of the constituents of the 14-Party alliance hold a meeting with the leaders of their district units which are adjacent to Dhaka on Monday to discuss the preparations of its rally at the capital’s Bangabandhu Avenue on Tuesday.
