The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is going to take fresh initiatives to reorganise the party’s committees at the grassroots level, party leaders confirmed.

This follows the BNP’s formation of the central committee, including its highest policymaking body, the standing committee, in recent times.

The latest initiative to reorganise the grassroots committees is the third of its kind in the past two and half years.

Party leaders now say it is taking up the initiative without any cut-off date this time around.

According to the BNP leaders concerned, they look forward to completing the task within an appropriate time.

The BNP completed its council session on 19 March, and the central committee was declared last month. The Chittagong committee was also declared partially on the same day.

BNP vice chairman Mohammad Shahjahan has been assigned to reorganise the party at the grassroots level by party chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The BNP declared its new 56-member committee (partial) for Dhaka on 29 August. Dewan Mohammad Salauddin and Khandaker Abu Ashfaq have been made the party’s Dhaka district unit president and secretary respectively.

AZM Rezwanul Haq was selected convener of the BNP’s Dinajpur district unit. But no council session took place in these two districts.

Mohammad Shahjahan said discussions ran among general secretary and assistant organising secretaries to reorganise the party grassroots committees.

On 4 February 2014, the BNP chairperson called for the party to be reorganised and to launch another movement against the Awami League government.

However, the BNP leaders could reorganise the party in 10-12 organisational districts out of 75.

On 5 January 2015, the BNP started yet another movement against the government without finishing the reorganisation.

The government filed a number of cases against the party leaders and workers, a process that, leaders themselves said, has significantly weakened the party.

On 6 August, the BNP resumed the reorganisation and managed to form new committees in 14 districts including Rangamati, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Netrokona.

The party’s last convention was delayed because of the municipal elections and the union parisad elections.
