The BNP has again warned of ‘tough’ street protests after the Eid-ul-Fitr to press for the restoration of a non-party caretaker administration to oversee the national elections.
It also threatened prolonged shutdowns and sieges to bring the country to a halt.
“We’ll resort to tough demonstrations after the Eid and take our movements to the next level by Oct 25,” Standing Committee member Moudud Ahmed said in Dhaka on Friday.
“Until now, we’ve been resorting to soft agitations. It is high time we took them to an extreme level,” he said.
He urged the ruling alliance to reach an understanding with the opposition to avoid conflict.
The general elections will be held under the ruling government, as the 15th Constitutional Amendment made in 2011 scrapped the provision for a caretaker government.
The opposition alliance, led by the BNP, has been on the streets since then, demanding its restoration, claiming polls under a party-led by would not be ‘free and fair’.
The former Law Minister said the main contest in the parliamentary polls would be between democratic and anti-democratic forces.
Citing the Awami League’s boycott of the 2007 elections, he said the BNP’s agitation, too, would be ‘timely and tough’.
“We want an end to the current crisis, which can be solved through peaceful polls under a non-party government,” he said.
