Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BaSaD) will participate in the Upazila Parishad elections.
These parties did not take part in the Jan 5 national polls.
CPB President Mujahidul Islam Selim told bdnews24.com on Tuesday, “The election was very crucial for empowerment in the grassroots level. For that we have decided to take part in this election.”
The two left-leaning parties would brief the media about their decision on Wednesday at the CPB’s Purana Paltan office on Wednesday, he said.
Selim said they did not participate in the general election since all parties did not join it.
“We have been saying the election should be held with the participation of all parties. Since there is no chance of contesting the Upazila polls with party symbol we think it is different from national polls,” the CPB chief said.
The Election Commission (EC) will hold the Upazila Parishad polls in six phases in a bid to maintain law and order.
On Feb 19, polls will be held in 102 Upazilas.
On Feb 27, 117 Upazilas will go to polls.
The polls to the remaining 268 Upazilas will be held in four more phases, but the schedules are yet to be announced.
The first Upazila Parishal polls were held in 1985 , the second in 1990 — both when HM Ershad was in power as military ruler.
The third Upazila Parishad polls were held in 2009, about two decades later.
