BNP to enforce half-day hartal in Siddhirganj Sunday

District BNP on Thursday called a half-day hartal for Sunday in Siddhirganj upazila protesting a court order sending nine local opposition men to jail in two cases.

District BNP president Advocate Taimur Alam Khandaker made the hartal call in the afternoon.

Taimur said they called the hartal only in Siddhirganj as most of the leaders who were denied bail hail from the area. “If the government does excess, hartal will be enforced in whole Narayanganj,” he warned.

Earlier, Judge Malik Abdullah Al Amin of the District and Session’s Judge Court sent the nine opposition leaders and activists to jail rejecting their bail petitions in the cases filed in connection with the May 6 Siddhirganaj violence unleashed by Hefajat-e-Islam men.

The same court, however, granted bail to eight BNP leaders, including Taimur and district BNP general secretary Kazi Moniruzzaman.

The 17 BNP men were made accused in two out of 16 cases filed with Sonargaon and Siddhirganj police stations over the violence.

On May 6 this year, at least 19 people, including two Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members and two cops, were killed and 100 others injured in a series of clashes between the law enforcers and Hefajat activists in Siddhirganju upazila.
