BNP policymakers, headed by Chairperson Khaleda Zia, have approved several proposals to amend the party’s constitution.

The party’s National Standing Committee cleared the proposals in a meeting presided over by Khaleda on Thursday.

Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters the party would reveal the amendments once they got the final clearance at the party’s sixth National Council scheduled for Saturday.

Khaleda and her son Tarique Rahman have already been elected, uncontested, chairperson and senior vice-chairperson, respectively.

Earlier, Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said the party would make changes to its constitution to specify Tarique’s role.

Khaleda had inaugurated the council logo before the Standing Committee meeting began.

The party amended its charter in the last council held in 2009 to include Tarique in the Standing Committee and increase the number of its members from 13 to 19.

Tarique, facing a slew of charges including money laundering, lives in London.

Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas is in jail in connection with violence-related cases. M Shamsul Islam, Sarwari Rahman, and Rafiqul Islam Miah did not attend the meeting.

Salauddin Quader Chowdhury has been hanged for war crimes.

RA Gani and Khandker Delwar Hossain have died. The committee on Thursday also expressed condolence over the deaths of its members.
