BNP says it’s ready for talks; urges govt not to confuse people

Accusing the government of constantly confusing people in the name of talks, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said they are ready to sit with the ruling party anytime, anywhere to break the political standoff.

“I would like to say with our party chairperson’s approval that we do want a dialogue but it has to be on non-party caretaker government. We’re ready to sit with you (Awami League) anywhere, but don’t confuse people over it,” he said.

Fakhrul came up with the call at a discussion arranged by BNP at the Jatiya Press Club, marking the 37th death anniversary of great leader Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, popularly called ‘Majloom Jononeta’ (leader of the oppressed).

Earlier on Friday, the BNP spokesman told UNB that he could not reach Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam over phone despite repeated attempts in the last couple of days. “I’m not getting any feedback about talks from him over phone.”

Ashraf, however, denied the allegation saying he did not get any phone call from Fakhrul’s number.

Showing no interest to give a counter response to Ashraf’s comment, Fakhrul said, “I don’t want to engage in a debate over telephone. I want to tell it clearly that we want to engage in dialogue over the polls-time non-party government.”

The BNP spokesman also warned that they will realise their demand through a strong street movement if the government does not take initiative for talks in time.

He alleged that the government is conspiring to create a division among the nationalist force to weaken the opposition’s movement.

“Many plots are on. They (govt) are conspiring to mar the unity of our party, alliance, and those out of the alliance demanding that the election be under a caretaker government. “It’s a pity that a party like Awami League is trying to hang onto power by hatching conspiracies,” he lamented.

Fakhrul blamed government agents for the killing of people with acts of sabotage, including torching vehicles and blasting bombs, during the hartals.

“The country’s people know who are setting fire to busses. Opposition has no link with any acts of sabotage. We condemn the killing of people in such heinous acts,” the BNP leader said.

He said the government agents are carrying out various subversive acts as part of government’s plot to blame opposition and implicate them in false cases.
