Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday once again sought appointment of president Abdul Hamid to discuss with him the party’s recent proposals on constituting a new Election Commission.
A three-member delegation of BNP couriered a letter– seeking the president’s appointment– to an on-duty staff at Bangabhaban on Wednesday afternoon, BNP assistant office secretary, Monir Hossain, told New Age.
The letter, signed by BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, has addressed the military secretary to the president, he said.
Earlier on the day, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a news conference at the party’s central office in the city came up with explanations for some of the party’s proposals.
He claimed that the proposals placed by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Friday did not violate the constitution in anyway.
He said BNP chairperson’s private secretary ABM Abdus Sattar on Sunday talked to the president’s military secretary over phone, seeking an appointment of the president for a meeting. The military secretary was yet to respond, he added.
Optimistic, he said the president– as a guardian of the state– will give them time.
The BNP leader said they distinctly mentioned what they wanted to mean by the proposals— about discussing with all the political parties over forming an acceptable EC.
Fakhrul said the party’s proposal seeking magistracy for defense forces and their deployment during elections couldn’t be termed as inflicting martial law.
He said deployment of army proved to be effective to curb disorders significantly during elections but to get effective and satisfactory results, army should get magistracy.
While responding to a question, BNP standing committee member, Moudud Ahmed said, ‘We have to admit in light of reality that we have a president whether we accept or not, whether he is good or bad’.
